AEJMC Best of the Web 2013

As Web-based multimedia storytelling has evolved, so has Best of the Web. We have made accommodations for the growing number of CMS and template-based options while keeping the competition’s emphasis on original, innovative, interactive storytelling. This year we have established two categories that will reward the academic intent and scope of entrants’ projects:

CATEGORIES

–Individual or Class Project

All content must be created by an individual or a class with guidance from the entrant’s professor. All elements must be designed by the individual or the class with guidance from the professor of record. University staff or outside consultants may not create content, do any design, or do any coding. Entrants may use widgets and plugins. The use of a template or a content management system theme as a starting point is allowed, but entrants should understand that the judges will reward originality and innovation. The use of pre-designed templates or CMS themes WITHOUT SIGNIFICANT ADAPTATION TO AN ORIGINAL DESIGN is not allowed. If your entry is included in a larger site that includes other projects, please be sure to send only the link to your project.

–School or Institutional Project

This category will consider larger projects created by more than one class at a university, or projects created by more than one university as part of a journalism institute or center. All visual content must be generated by students. The entire project must be designed primarily by students with the understanding that due to database and technical issues outside the scope of a university class, contributions from professors, university staff and outside consultants may be necessary. Entrants may use widgets and plugins. The use of pre-designed template or a content management system theme as a starting point is allowed, but entrants should understand that the judges will reward originality and innovation. The use of pre-designed templates or CMS themes WITHOUT SIGNIFICANT ADAPTATION TO AN ORIGINAL DESIGN is not allowed. If your entry is included in a larger site that includes other projects, please be sure to send only the link to your project.

AWARDS

Judges will consider all entries based on content, design and technical innovation and will decide first place, second place and honorable mention awards for each category, as well as one award of excellence for the best overall entry.

1) DESIGN

Best use of content, design and interactivity to tell a story. First place, second place and honorable mention.

2) INNOVATION

Best use of content, innovative technology and interactivity to tell a story. First place, second place and honorable mention.

RULES FOR ENTERING

The ONLY qualified entrants for this competition are faculty and students who work for or attend an institution that is accredited by ACEJMC, or are current (paid) individual members of AEJMC and their students. University and college staff are not eligible to be entrants of record.

Individual/Class Project: The entrant of record should be the person who designed and primarily built the site.

School/Institutional Project: The entrant of record should be the supervising faculty member if the entrant contributed significantly to the design and production of the site. All school/institutional entries must be PRIMARILY created by students and faculty and not by staff, paid consultants or professional designers.

DISCLOSURE

1) The entry form will require you to list the names and roles of the students and faculty members who contributed to your entry as well as the names and roles of any contributors to your project who are not students or faculty members. The list MUST include the name and position of any university staff members, designers, developers or database consultants who contributed in any way to your project.

2) The entry form will require you to list the templates, CMS themes, plugins and widgets you used to produce your project.

SITES

All sites entered must advance education or research in journalism or mass communication. Sites unrelated to this field are NOT accepted. Sites must fit into one of the given categories. A site may be submitted only once per year and in only ONE category. An entrant may enter more than one site in a single year. Sites that do not fit the criteria will be eliminated from the competition by the chairs.

TO ENTER

A link to the contest entry form is at http://www.answerq.org/form.html

Call for panels extended; Sign up for the Collective Intelligence database

If you’re an AEJMC Viscom member and/or Viscom Listserv subscriber, take note:

Two items in this post:
1) Extension of panel proposals for the 2013 AEJMC Viscom Division to midnight of Oct. 24, 2012, Eastern Time.
Please send your proposal through
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?fromEmail=true&formkey=dHNZZU9oa05xSElmWkJFQ2szU3ZKNVE6MQ
If you already submitted your proposal and want to revise it, please submit the revised one after adding “(revision)” at the end of the title.

The original call, including proposals that were accepted last time, can be found at http://aejmc.net/vis/

2) Collective intelligence:
What would you do if you need to locate a guest speaker for your class, an expert for a panel, or a collaborator for your professional or research project?

Using a database I am planning to construct must be one excellent way you can solve the problem.

The database describes
* current and past professional and scholarly activities of visual scholars and professionals,
* their skills, talents and expertise,
* whether they are available to you and the public as a guest speaker, information source, reviewer, contributor, or consultant, and
* their contact number.

Only when you supply information on you, you can access this database.

I strongly recommend you take time to fill out the form.

Also ask your friends, colleagues or others who are interested in visual journalism to fill out the form.

Visual Communication Quarterly: Call for Papers

Domestic Images in the Digital, Online, and Viral Era

Guest Editors: David D. Perlmutter and Lisa Silvestri, The University of Iowa

VCQ - Sept. 2011Today anyone with a cellphone and an Internet connection can create and distribute images without professional training or a governmental or industrial institutional affiliation. Whether funny cat YouTube uploads, vacation videos (from a tsunami site) or pictures of the humiliation of Iraqi prisoners, images that once fell under the genre of “domestic” are now regularly erupting onto world attention, controversy, and influence. Likewise, ordinary citizens are delivering the first visual “draft of history” because they are first on the scene of breaking news—from terror-filled moments in a London subway after a bombing to an airliner landing on the Hudson River.
This special issue of VCQ seeks scholars and practitioners who study or document the blurring between “home” photography and “public,” professional, or commercial photography as it becomes increasingly indistinct in our viral digital/online/social media age.

Among possible questions to ask: What does it mean when the “home mode” goes viral? How does the role of the professional photographer and industry change when “citizen journalists” are creating so much public content? What new genres of photography are emerging in the home–public fusion? How does the domestic origin of an image affect its reception? What are the historical antecedents to this phenomenon (e.g., images of the Holocaust that were originally souvenir snapshots by its perpetrators or domestic scenes of celebrities made famous after their deaths?)

VCQ: Visual Communication Quarterly solicits contributions for an upcoming special issue on the domestic image. VCQ welcomes essays that consider the relationship between “home” and “public” modes of photography, visuality in a viral era, digitization, Photoshopping, cropping, and dissemination. In addition to theoretically grounded, critical essays, we will consider the submission of visual essays and photo pieces. Max. word length for essays: 7500.

Deadline for submissions: February 20, 2013

VCQ: Visual Communication Quarterly publishes scholarship and professional imagery that promotes an inclusive, broad discussion of all things visual, while also encouraging synthesis and theory building across our fascinating field of study. See: http://vcquarterly.org/ for submission style and guidelines. Please email an electronic version of your essay (as an MS Word document), along with a 100 word abstract, to david-perlmutter@uiowa.edu. For portfolios, send inquiry first.

A new look for VisCom

If you’re a returning visitor to the Visual Communication division website, you may notice a new look. The previous site has migrated onto a new WordPress-based platform. The new format will provide more flexibility in updating the look of the site and greater compatibility with mobile devices. It will also provide greater interaction for the division members by providing space to comment on items and tools to receive notifications of new content.

You will have to update your bookmarks though. If you have a previous bookmark to the Visual Communication division site, please update it to http://aejmc.net/vis/. You’ll have to update any bookmarks to internal pages too.

And let us know if there’s something you’d like to see added to the site.
