Colleagues,
While the discussion has been cathartic at least, I get no sense of consensus on whether we believe there is a problem at all between the educators and media professionals, much less any consensus on ideas on how to address such issues if we agreed they needed addressing.
I'd be OK about having a bit of a free for all if this were 1975 and both media outlets and universities seemed stable and sustainable.
But we are in a very volatile environment and I am worried that if continue to maintain the status quo as a profession and as a field we will face similar wrenching dislocations as our colleagues in the media businesses face.
I am pleased that there seems to be so much good work out there, and I am sorry I can't keep up with it all, but I question whether and to what extent the procedures and structures that support and produce that work can be maintained.
Maybe there are no one-size-fits-all answers out there. Still, I'd be willing to work on some "best practices for mass comm researchers in the coming decades" or a white paper of some sort or something to give us a starting point Maybe Jerry Ceppos has giiven us that.

Louisiana has a good document it uses to guide professional P/T also. Sounds like you also have one. At the highest levels, a ground breaking story and groundbreaking research are indeed quite similar.

As I said in my column (http://hardnewscafe.usu.edu/?p=8031), although Utah State is a Carnegie I Research Institution, my university has aggressively supported teaching as the area of excellence for promotion & tenure. For us, that means we have hired professionals (with teaching experience and a master's degree) on tenure-track, who teach more and are evaluated for P&T on the basis of of a set of pedagogy measures by a 5-member P&T committee that is identical to that of their research-oriented colleagues. We are currently doing a search for a tenure-track person with the requirements of five years professional experience and a master's; the PhD OR "equivalent professional experience" is "preferred," because our institution does prefer doctorates. But our provost has accepted the premise that significant professional experience is equivalent (or superior) to a PhD for the purposes of our professional/applied program. Defining what that means for applicants and central administration for finalist is sticky, but we have successfully added tenure-track faculty with master's and both teaching and critical professional experience—one so far, but that individual has made a huge impact, both in the department and university.
It is a process of constant education of the upper administration to make the case for the kind of faculty that are essential to build the kind of successful applied program we have convinced the higher-ups is good for students and the university. It can be a challenge, but it can be done.

That’s good to know. Some of us are working on a letter to university leaders about this. Columbia has by far the best description of what professionals should do for tenure, in my opinion, and I’m sure they’d share it.

Thanks Tracy.
I've already gotten over 50 posts in the past couple of days. Maybe it's worth another panel discussion?
For my unit, it's my university's tenure and promotion criteria that are the stumbling block. And, we have not been able to change that.

Steve,
Yes, you are correct in the detail comment: there were good and helpful suggestions about how to make research more useful until it degenerated into what I mentioned. I provided a headline.
About a debate, there’s no problem finding people to argue that journalism education needs huge reforms. Jarvis, Finberg, Ceppos and Newton all have written recently. The issue is that the people who want to defend the status quo. Who will speak in public?

Eric,
Whom would you choose for the debate?
Also, there are professional journalists on this list. I love to teach, but I am back mainly to being a professional journalist, and have been since 2005. There are also former professionals on the list. It is not "merely" professors talking to professors."

Professors talking to professors about how journalists don’t understand... Not the best way to advance the issue. How about a public debate? Let’s see how many of your points hold up to counterargument.
