[AEJMC Newspaper Division list] NWSP Division Name Change?

Yes,

I agree with Tracy. A newspaper is a newspaper.
I am in the community newspaper business, and we
are thriving. Yes, the big dailies are hurting from big debts from
foolish acquisitions — and loss of real estate and classifieds.

But community newspapers are picking up the slack.
Profits at many weeklies have been helped by a slide in
the cost of newsprint, due to the dailies’ problems.

Here in St. Louis, we are watching new on-line
newspaper start-ups floundering and laying off writers and closing.
Big city dailies may be hurting, but the verdict
is far from in that on-line newspapers will replace them. On-line
operations are still largely charity operations.

More big dailies may close or mutate. But in America’s hometown
settings where many Americans live — newspapers are here to stay.

Don Corrigan,
professor and editor of Times weekly newspapers.
