[AEJMC Newspaper Division list] Report from Denver

Hello Everyone,
 
The purpose of this e-mail is to give you all a brief report about what went on at the Newspaper Division's membership meeting in Denver. Three big issues were addressed:
 
1. Name Change--Those present at the meeting voted to survey division members about the issue. Members will be presented with two options on the survey. The first will be to keep the name "Newspaper Division." The second option will be to change the division name to "Newspapers and Online News."
 
If the majority want a name change, John Carvalho, the incoming division head, will be in touch with other divisions potentially impacted by our name change. But, the vote will be the first step and of course, voting will be restricted to division members.
 
Please watch for more detailed information regarding the survey in the upcoming division newsletter and/or via e-mails and postings on the listserv.
 
2. Dues Increase for Faculty--Membership dues for faculty members will increase from $16 to $24. The $8 rate for graduate student members will remain the same.  The division hasn't raised dues in more than 15 years and even with the increase, the amount we charge is still lower than many other divisions.
 
As a benefit from the dues increase, the division will offer two new grant opportunities which will be awarded at the 2011 convention:
 
--A $200 teaching grant
--A $500 research grant
 
Again, more details will be forthcoming about the reasoning behind the dues increase and the grants.
 
3. 2014 Convention Location--From a list of potential cities, AEJMC headquarters asked each division to vote on their top three choices for the 2014 convention. Based on voting at the meeting our top three choices were:
 
1. Montreal
 
2. Jacksonville, FL
 
3. Tampa, FL
