[AEJMC Newspaper Division list] Simplify the name. Don't complicate it.

Just a note about "News Division": As some others have noted, I think other AEJMC divisions also lay claim to news, such as Radio-TV, Visual Communication and Magazine. They probably would not endorse our adopting the name.

I have been avoiding the debate but must add a quick affirmation to the idea of "News Division" for the name. We are teaching "news" whether it be paper or online, and as journalists, a concise name seems like the least we could do.

If we focus on content, "News Division" makes the most sense. Plus
it's concise.
Tieing the
division name to a specific distribution platform is part
of the platform fixation that only reifies the technophile tendencies
in American culture.
However, I still favor no change whatsoever. Chicken Little is alive
and rampant. We should not be giving false credit to stock market
myths and youth culture myths and ignore the reality of the
newspapers as business enterprises that are still highly profitable
and are NOT in danger of going dinosaur.
Cheers,
Fred
