[AEJMC Newspaper Division list] New name for Newspaper Division?

Colleagues -- I think there may be a place for something like a
"News" division or IG in AEJMC, and perhaps in time such a division
will be formed to include many of the things currently done by many,
many other subdivisions of AEJMC. But in the near future, adopting
(or trying to adopt) that name -- and with all due and sincere
respect to its well-intended supporters -- is at once arrogant and
ordinary.
So long as there are newspapers -- and all the evidence suggests that
there will be newspapers for some years to come -- there will be a
need within AEJMC for a division that focuses on issues unique to
that industry. The division may not be among the largest or most
influential divisions of AEJMC in the future, just as the medium we
study has lost marketshare and cultural influence, but so be it.
Newspapers are more than just "news," and they are more than just
"journalism." Newspapers deliver a considerable amount of information
to the public that would not be classified as "news" by even the more
liberal definition (i.e., classified ads, the comics, recipes,
display advertising, advice columns) and many, many types of
localized information that simply is not found in other media
(obituaries, letters to the editor, wedding announcements suitable
for cutting out, etc.). And in my own research of newspapers in
small, rural communities, the ink-on-paper version is very much
cherished in those communities as an affirmation of community life.
Again, I like the idea of a "News Division" to focus on the
journalism of gathering and presenting news -- vs. entertainment or
opinion or the like -- but not as a replacement for the Newspaper
Division.
